Robert Irvin Lohr passed away peacefully on November 13, 2024, at his son George’s home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, surrounded by his loving family, and George’s dogs Louie & Sofie, who shared a special bond with Bob.
Bob was born on December 26, 1947, in Willard, Ohio. He graduated from Willard High School in 1965 and went on to attend Ohio Wesleyan University, where he earned a B.A. in history in 1969. He was a proud and active member of the Chi Phi fraternity. Most importantly, OWU is where he met the love of his life, Susan Jane Barbieri. They married the year after graduation and spent fifty loving years together, happily raising their three children.
Bob is survived by his daughter Carole Ann Lohr of Nashville, TN, son Clark David Lohr (wife Laurie Lohr, granddaughter Kayla Lohr) all of Rogers, MN, and son George Robert Lohr of Chapel Hill, NC. He is also survived by his three sisters, Carole Lohr, Janet Songer, and Kay Lohr, along with thirteen nephews and nieces.
Bob’s keen interest in history and civil rights justice led to him teaching history & social studies to public high school students in Cleveland, OH for the first several years of his work life. After returning to school, he obtained a CPA designation and spent his remaining working life in corporate tax accounting and financial management.
Family meant everything to Bob, and he greatly enjoyed traveling with them through the years, many times to their residence on Wrightsville Beach, NC. Bob’s granddaughter Kayla was the “apple of his eye,” traveling with Clark & Laurie to visit him in North Carolina several times yearly where Bob especially adored his time with Kayla in the pool and on the beach. Among many other interests, Bob enjoyed reading history & politics, doing sudokus & crossword puzzles, sipping Manhattans on the balcony at Wrightsville Beach, and entertaining. In recent years, Bob enjoyed cooking & shucking oysters with his sons & daughter. All of Bob’s family and friends will miss him terribly, remembering that brilliant smile, his generous spirit, that keen sense of humor, and his loving presence.
A Roman Catholic Mass will be held on November 25, 2024, 11AM at Our Lady of Lourdes in Raleigh, NC with a memorial following at his Glenwood Avenue residence in Raleigh.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to PBS North Carolina.
Brown-Wynne, 300 Saint Mary's St, Raleigh, is serving the Lohr family.
