He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Reca Sanders Hines; his parents; and his brother Edwin Kendall Hines.
Bobby is survived by his 3 daughters, Allison Ficken (David), Leigh Baker, and Barrie Shavlik (Dean); his 6 grandchildren, Ally Baker Doak (John), Lenox Baker Meythaler (Bradford), Matthew Ficken (Leah), George Ficken (Addy), Jane Barrett Shavlik Patterson (Patrick) and Becca Shavlik Gauss (Jack); and his 8 great-grandchildren, who loved their “Da", and who he adored; and by his brother Willam Jack Hines, Jr. and sister Betty Hines Huffman (Don).
Bobby and his brother Ken were entrepreneurs from a young age. They shared a News and Observer paper route by the time he was 13. The brothers got up at 4:00 am every morning for 5 years to start their route and made memories that became stories told again and again.
Bobby never knew a stranger and was known for his heart of gold. He graduated from Broughton High School in 1954 where he was voted as the senior class "Beau" by his peers. Bobby followed in his brother's footsteps and attended Wake Forest University, where he earned a BA in Business and worked as the head manager of the football team to pay his way. It was at Wake Forest that he met the love of his life, Reca, and the couple married in 1959. The young couple welcomed twin girls in 1960 and a third daughter in 1965.
Just out of Wake Forest, Bobby worked for the Commission for the Blind setting up business opportunities for the visually impaired - ironic, as he lost his own vision at the age of 82. Bobby then started US Floor Systems, Inc. with his partner Joe Christian, selling distributorships for SteamEx and Deep Steam machines. In less than 20 years, they grew the company into a huge success, operating throughout the US as well as Canada and Europe. The company’s success was due in large part to Bobby’s epic personality and ability to interact and relate with people from all walks of life.
Bobby’s next passion was golf. He spent so much time on the golf course, with his brother Ken, that they were coined "every day Hines" and "all day Hines". He won 5 consecutive club championships at Carolina Country Club, and had 17 hole-in-ones. He valued the friendships and stories that flourished there. After 18 holes, Bobby moved inside to the 19th Hole where you could find him playing Gin Rummy with those same dear friends and sharing hilarious stories.
Most importantly, Bobby lived a life dedicated to Christ. He was a genuine man who loved his family and God. Bobby attended Ridge Road Baptist church for the majority of his life, where he served as a Deacon and a Sunday School Teacher for decades. He was a member of his beloved "Seekers" Sunday school class, which he attended regularly until his final days.
A special thanks to the wonderful caregivers and staff at the Cardinal and the nurses and staff at Transitions.
