Bob attended the American School in London and graduated from George Marshall High School, McLean, VA. He attended the University of Edinburgh, Scotland and graduated from Georgia Tech in 1969. Upon graduation he was commissioned in the U.S. Navy and entered Nuclear Power School. He joined the commissioning crew of the U.S.S. Flying Fish, SSN673. Upon completion of active duty he served in the U.S. Naval Reserves, retiring as Captain. He had a long and distinguished career. He joined CP&L where he served in capacity as Senior Principal Engineer for Nuclear Licensing, Director of Emergency Preparedness and Manager of Corporate Safety Review. He was a private consultant as well as serving in disaster relief as a Public Assistance Coordinator for FEMA. Bob earned his professional engineer designation in 1979. He was a member of the American Nuclear Society, serving as local section chairman and on the National Board of Directors. He was a member of The Capital City Club and Porters Neck Country Club. He served in prison ministries through The Gideons and Prison Fellowship Ministries. Bob participated in Bible Study Fellowship & was a member of Southbridge Fellowship Church.
He is survived by his wife, Beth, son, Matthew and wife, Elizabeth, cherished grandchildren; Avery and Davis, mother, Jane F. Black, aunt, Kathleen Beckworth, and several cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel at St. David’s School, 3440 White Oak Rd., Raleigh with full military honors.
