Richard (“Dick”) was born on July 17, 1941, in Worcester, Massachusetts, the only child of Edith and Francis J. Driscoll. As the cherished son, Dick had a twinkle in his eye for mischief and parents that closely watched over him. It was his keen intellect and love of chemistry that finally kept him out of trouble. He attended Northeastern University and received a B.S. degree in pharmacy and a M.S. degree in medical chemistry. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut and remained a lifelong lover of the Huskies. Dick had a long and successful career as Senior Vice President of Research and Development for Organon Teknika (now bioMerieux) and various other companies.
Dick had a long and successful career as Senior Vice President of Research and Development for pharmaceutical diagnostic companies. One of his greatest achievements was the Bac T Alert. A diagnostic instrument used in hospitals around the world to this day. He headed a team of 40 Ph.D’s, 34 MS, and 73 BS level scientists, researching Thrombosis and Hemostasis, Infectious Diseases, Microbiology, Documentation & Clinical Investigation, Applied Research and Instrumentation Research and Developments. Dick was also an inventor and listed on several patents, several of which went on to benefit society. He was a member of The American Association of Clinical Chemists, Association of Clinical Scientist, American Pharmaceutical Association, and Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Dick was a lifelong lover of sports and could typically be found cheering on his Boston teams. He closely followed the Patriots and Celtics and even contributed to Fenway Park’s renovations. He spent hours discussing why and how the Red Sox should and could beat the NY Yankees.
Upon retirement from his science career, he spent his time researching and investing in the stock market. Dick also went back to school and obtained his license as a General Building Contractor. He built his beloved home on Bald Head Island, where his family enjoyed many wonderful moments. Dick is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carol Ann Buduo Driscoll, his daughter Leza Lee Driscoll, Esq. (and husband Dr. Reto Asmis); son David Christopher Driscoll (and wife Dr. Wendy Driscoll); and his four grandchildren Dr. Caroline Hansen, David Hansen, Victoria Driscoll and Alexander Driscoll. All of whom loved, respected and will miss him.
Funeral service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery, 701 Oakwood Ave, Raleigh, NC at 2pm on Dec 2, 2023. A reception will follow.
