He graduated from Myers Park High School in 1959; North Carolina State University in 1963 and was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity; received his MBA at Kenan-Flagler School of Business in 1965. Richard worked briefly at Exxon and AT&T before spending the rest of his business career at IBM in various locations throughout the US.
Richard had a great love of music, always appreciated a great sense of humor including his own and loved his dogs and hunting. He lived a life full of adventure that included world travel and competitive sailing, including a leisure trip using celestial navigation to Bermuda.
He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather with dedication and commitment to the Lord and His church.
After 55 years of marriage, Richard is survived by his wife, Ann, of Raleigh; his son Bradford and his wife, Laura, of Atlanta; his son, Rich and his wife, Stella, and their children – Abbey, Julia, and Lowell – all of Charlotte; his daughter Ashley, of Raleigh; his brother Paul, and his daughter, Olivia, of Killingworth, CT; and his sister Robin Hussey, and her husband, Brian, of Charlotte.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 4, at 11:00am at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 100 East Peace Street, Raleigh, N.C. 27604.
In lieu of flowers, the family would request donations be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in honor of Ann E. Barefoot - www.nationalmssociety.org/donate
