Rebecca Powers Hines went home to be with the Lord on the morning of Saturday, December 10, 2016. Becky was born on September 10, 1933, in Wilmington, NC. She was the oldest of 3 children of Dr. Frank Poydras Powers of Wallace and Mrs. Rebecca Johnson Powers of Burgaw.
Becky moved to Raleigh when she was 5. She was an excellent student, an avid reader and a lover of literature. She graduated from Broughton High School in 1951, attended Salem College for two years and graduated from Wake Forest University in 1955 with a degree in English.
On December 20, 1954, Becky married her high school sweetheart Ken Hines of Raleigh, and they shared 62 years of marriage together. They moved to Bordeaux, France as newlyweds, while Ken served in the Army.
Becky loved her Lord, her family, and her books. She leaves us with a legacy of loving the Lord wholeheartedly and serving Him faithfully.
Becky was an original member of Bible Study Fellowship and a leader for over 20 years. She was an active member of Salt Shakers for the past 11 years. Becky was a founding member of Christ Baptist Church in 2003.
Becky and Ken had two children and she was a dedicated mother and homemaker. She was active in the Junior League and served as their Treasurer. Becky also served as Treasurer for Ken’s business. Becky and Ken are long time members of Carolina Country Club. Becky enjoyed painting and also served as a docent at the NC Museum of Art. She also taught illiterate adults to read.
Becky loved to visit Burgaw and Wrightsville Beach with her mom’s family as a child. She and Ken ended up owning second homes at Wrightsville Beach for many years. Our family enjoyed many happy memories with them there.
Becky leaves behind a large and loving family and many friends, including her husband, Edwin Kendall Hines, Sr., son Ken Hines Jr. and his wife Cathy, daughter Becky Hines Boyette and her husband Steve; grandchildren, Stephen Boyette and his wife Abby, Blair Boyette Cobb and her husband Kevin, Kendall Boyette and her fiancé Tyler Betts, Scott Hines, and Kelly Hines; and great grandson Paxton Boyette; a sister, Mary Miller Powers May and a brother, Frank P. Powers Jr. and his wife Nancy; and a large and loving extended family.
A private family burial will be held at Historic Oakwood Cemetery. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at 1:00 pm at Christ Baptist Church, 400 Newton Rd., Raleigh. A visitation at the church will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Samaritan’s Purse or AnGeL Ministries.
