Born December 2, 1940 in Burlington, NC to the late Lyman Way James and Pearl (Tickle) James Mayton. He graduated from Broughton High School in 1958 and Chowan College (Murfreesboro, NC) in 1960 where he received a Diploma in Graphic Arts. He was Associate Editor of The Chowanian, college newspaper and The Chowanka annual. He served as A1C in the U.S. Air Force based at Chicksands, England as Radio Operator.
In 1968, he married Judith Ann Young of Wake Forest, NC. They were married 50 years on October 5, 2018 and had a grand celebration at The Angus Barn with the members of the wedding party. The love of his life, Judy, passed away only a few months later - Feb 2019.
He worked for several years assisting Don Etheridge with Kodak/FinColor photography business and later at Nowell’s Fine Men’s Clothing at North Hills Mall, and Brown-Wynne Funeral Home (Millbrook).
Among his many enjoyments, he and his wife loved to read, attend sports events, especially basketball at Wake Forest, NCSU, Duke, UNC, Nascar racing, photography, golfing, bird watching, telling stories and chit-chatting with everyone, especially celebrities.
Raymond is survived by Larry (Leigh) Jones (cousin) of Elon, NC; Don (Sue) Tickle (cousin) of Raleigh, NC; Faye Saunders (cousin) of Mebane; Robert (Bobby) Mayton Jr. (stepbrother) of Raleigh, NC; Edward (Claire) Young (brother-in-law) of Virginia Beach, VA; Stephen (Anathea) Young (nephew-in-law) of Hurdle Mills, NC; Amy (Shawn) Locklear (niece-in-law) of Prattville, AL; David (Jennifer) Young (nephew-in-law) of Dunn, NC.
Special thanks to Marlene Nickell for her devotion and nursing guidance with Raymond’s medical needs after the passing of his wife in Feb 2019. Also, special thanks to Janet Pruitt and Susie Jefferies (neighbors and guardian angels) as well as Amy Young Locklear (niece-in-law), Larry and Leigh Jones for their everlasting friendship and support.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, Saturday, Oct 23, 2021 at 3:00pm at Raleigh Memorial Park (7501 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, NC 27612). The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Attendees are encouraged to wear a face mask and practice social distancing.
