Randy Ray Godwin was born on July 25, 1954, the son of Shirley (Adams) and Ray Godwin. He passed away on August 7, 2024, glad to have reached his 70th birthday, despite a five-year struggle with lung cancer, emphysema and pain.
Randy will be so very missed by his family. He leaves behind Crystal Farrow, life partner of 24 years, and his loyal dog-friend Sawdust. In addition, he is survived by daughter Leigh Ann Collins and grandson Caden Collins, sisters Sharon (Dave) Scheffel and Cathie (David) Strawn, nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephew, long time friends and caring neighbors.
Randy grew up in Wake County, graduating from Millbrook High School. He was a carpenter working in many phases of construction in many locations during his long career. He retired in 2019 after 20 years of self-employment where he happily built custom woodwork projects for his clients. His favorite project was the restoration and beautification of the historic home he shared with Crystal. His creative and masterful work in the home will last for generations to come.
In addition to being a master craftsman, he loved to read fiction and history, cared for orchids inside the house and the garden outside. He would offer an opinion on almost any subject, but was always willing to contemplate different perspectives, enjoying conversations where he just might change his opinion after a well-reasoned argument.
Randy had a strong faith in the Lord which helped him through his illness and prepared him for his next journey.
He received excellent care from Duke Oncology and hospice support from Transitions Lifecare in his last month. Crystal and family are thankful for the kindness shown by the staff at Person Street Pharmacy. We offer our special thanks to Dr. Zane Lapinskes for so much more than his outstanding physician skills. His visits, compassion, kindness and friendship have supported us all along the way.
At Randy’s request, no formal service is planned. An informal gathering of friends and family will be held in the future.
Arrangements by Brown-Wynne, 300 Saint Mary's Street, Raleigh.
