Born January 19, 1942 in Brooklyn, NY, he lived in Brooklyn, NY; Louvain, Belgium; Montreal Canada; Winston Salem, NC; and for the past 49 years, Raleigh.
Dr. Lowy was a 1963 graduate of Long Island University (Brooklyn, NY) and a 1970 graduate of the Catholic University of Louvain medical school (Louvain, Belgium), a resident at Reddy Memorial Hospital in 1969-70 (Montreal, Canada), and an intern at Forsyth Memorial Hospital (now Novant Health, Winston Salem, NC). After completing his formal education, Dr. Lowy continued to work at Forsyth Memorial until opening a family practice in Wendell, NC. Medicine being Dr. Lowy’s passion, even after his retirement, Dr. Lowy continued to serve the community at the Urban Ministries of Wake County.
In 1963, Dr. Lowy married the love of his life Jayne Fischman Lowy (1942-2014), with whom he raised two daughters Irene Ascher (David), of Morganville, NJ; and Rachel Werkheiser (Gregory) of Wilmington, DE. Dr. Lowy is survived by his daughters and five wonderful and adored grandchildren.
Dr. Lowy believed that education was a never ending quest and continued to attend and participate in continuing education throughout his life. He was an avid reader, news junkie, jogger, hiker, and lover of ice cream. Dr. Lowy was also a longtime member of Raleigh’s Jewish community, including Beth Meyer Synagogue.
Dr. Lowy was interred in the Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery.
