He graduated from Broughton High in 1973, where he was a member of the Air Force JROTC and given a Service award. Phil was also a Chevalier by Order of Demolay. He then attended aviation school in Kansas and immediately began working as an Aircraft A&P with Piedmont Airlines. His career in aviation spanned 37 years including a private pilot license, United Airlines and most recently, Federal Express, where he achieved five star status as a Managing Director.
He married Sally Moseley, with whom he had three children, later divorced. In 1998, he married Stephanie Ward, adopted her three children, and in 2000 sealed as a family in the Washington DC Temple. Phil was a member of the LDS Church, serving in positions such as Cub Scout Master, Elders Quorum President, and a counselor in the Bishopric. Phil loved to spend time with his family, travel, and serving others.
Phil is survived by his wife, Stephanie, four sons Phillip Adam Coley, Stephen Andrew Coley, Joshua Allen Coley, and Jacob Hughes Coley; two daughters, Allison Coley Blanks and her husband Michael and Madison Elizabeth Coley and his mother, Eleanor Coley. He will also be missed by his sisters Pat Ballance and her husband Jerry, and Shannon Griffith, and his nephew Matthew Ballance and niece Morgan Griffith.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 from 7-9 PM at Mitchell Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at 11:00AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1524 Jenkins Road Wake Forest, NC. Memorial donations can be made to the Jim 'Catfish' Hunter Chapter of the NC ALS Association, 120 Penmarc Drive, Ste 101, Raleigh NC 27603 or to the Kidney Cancer Association, in memory of Phil.
