Peggy Cameron Mordecai, 93, passed away April 4th following a brief hospitalization. After living most of her adult life in Raleigh, NC she resided in assisted living with her husband Bill in Durham, NC the last five years.
She leaves behind her loving and devoted husband of nearly 70 years, William G. “Bill” Mordecai, Jr.; her daughter, Beth (Howard) Eisenson; her son, William (Heather) Mordecai III; grandchildren, Vince (Amal) Eisenson, Heather Eisenson (Colin) Campbell, Michael Mordecai; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, David Daniel Shields Cameron, Jr. and her sister, Mary "Peaches" Johns Cameron Mills.
Peggy was born in 1930 in Fayetteville, NC to the late David Daniel Shields Cameron and Margaret Porter Cameron and grew up in Southern Pines, NC. She graduated from UNC - Greensboro with a BS in Biology and Physical Education and moved to Raleigh where she was a PE teacher at St. Mary’s Jr. College. In Raleigh she met and married Bill Mordecai and raised her family. During those years she was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church, Wake County Parks and Recreation Commission, Raleigh Racquet Club and the Wake County Historical Society.
Peggy later embarked upon a second career as a genealogist specializing in families of Scottish ancestry, with active membership in the Wake County and NC Genealogical societies, as well as Clan Cameron.
She always took great delight in visits from family and friends and was so appreciative of the many people who took care of her during her later years.
Peggy will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Raleigh’s Oakwood Cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial service on Monday, May 1st at 2:00 pm at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 E. Edenton St, Raleigh, NC 27601, with a reception immediately following.
