Peggy Joyner Frisbie

Peggy Joyner Frisbie passed away peacefully in Raleigh after a year of declining health. Her faith sustained her after the passing of both of her children in December 2019. Her own pastor called her “feisty.” She was so much more than faithful and feisty.

Peggy was the only child of Bryan and Ruby Joyner and grew up in Lewiston, NC. Even though it was the Great Depression, Peggy always noted she had a charmed childhood. At age 13, her cousin David Joyner (1944 - 2002) was born and she always considered him her brother, as they lived across the street from each other. David’s children are Peggy’s godchildren and she was always active in their lives.

At age 16, Peggy was accepted at Wake Forest University and enrolled as a math major intending to go to medical school. James Franklin Frisbie (1927-2004), the love her life, courted her under a magnolia tree and they married when she was 19, but she promised her father to one day finish her degree.

Early years were spent following husband Jim in his IBM career and raising her two children, Penelope “Penny” Louise Frisbie (1951-2019) and James “Jimmy” Franklin Frisbie, Jr. (1952-2019). She served as Penny’s Girl Scout leader and Jim’s Cub Scout leader. Peggy also served as chairperson of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System in the mid-1960s.

Peggy and Jim traveled the world and visited nations in Asia, South America and Europe. During these years, her consummate cooking skills explored new cuisines and Peggy and Penny even attended a cooking school in France.

She returned to school to finish a psychology degree from Meredith College, revived her high school interest in playing tennis, completed her real estate license requirements and became an agent for several years.

She served on committees in many communities and was president of her neighborhood association in Virginia. In every town she and Jim lived in she maintained a home filled with gracious warmth and hospitality.

First Baptist Church of Raleigh was her faith community and she served in the clothing ministry, in the church office, and in leadership positions with her Sunday school class. People at First Baptist provided Peggy with loving support she noted many times over the years.

Never one to refrain from offering an opinion, Peggy balanced her constructive criticism with humor and wit. She enjoyed a glass of red wine and any kind of dark chocolate. She loved being surrounded by laughter and smiles of loving friends.

Her strength of will and resilience carried her through much sorrow. “My faith has sustained me, and I know I will see my family again,” she often said. And after looking for them everywhere, she has finally found them.

Peggy is survived by her three godchildren and their families. Lisa Joyner Rascoe (F.E.N.) and their children, Nixon and Joyner; Stephanie Joyner Phelps (Renn) and their children, Mary Charles and Henry; and David Charles Joyner, Jr. (Meredith) and their son, David Charles Joyner, III “Tripp”.

Other family members include cousins, Lou Ann Jackson (Lance), of Clemmons, NC, Dayle Vaughan of Lewiston, NC and Kim Vaughan of Raleigh.

A funeral service for Peggy will be held Monday, October 30, 2023 at 1:30 pm at First Baptist Church of Raleigh, 99 N Salisbury St, Raleigh, NC 27603. The family will receive from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm at the church. Following the funeral service, burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery, 701 Oakwood Ave, Raleigh, NC 27601.
