Paul was born on June 18, 1942 in Statesville, North Carolina and grew up in Graham, NC. He graduated from Graham High School in 1960, then from North Carolina State University in 1969 in Political Science. He spent most of his career in sales and small business but also pursued political office on a few occasions and was an active leader in the pro-life movement in North Carolina in the 1980’s. He leaves behind a legacy of love and concern for the unborn and the mothers who find themselves in such challenging circumstances.
Paul was also known for his two decades of service in leading the parking ministry of Providence Church in Raleigh and for his service as a deacon and servant to Christ Baptist Church of Raleigh. He enjoyed singing and was active in choral societies and the choir at Christ Baptist. He also had a gift for writing poetry and enjoyed reciting it.
He is survived by his wife, Judith Sharpe Smith of Raleigh; children, Norman Smith (Diane), Paula Mullins (Kenneth), & Jeremy Smith (Anita); eight grandchildren, Marty Smith (Ashley), Matthew Smith, Hunter Mullins, Quinn Mullins, Callie Smith, Zane Smith, Ella Smith, and Jude Smith; three great grandchildren, Brooke Smith, Mackenzie Smith; and baby Smith (due Oct. 11). Paul, who went by his middle name Wayne for the first two decades of life, loved to be around people and told everyone he knew about his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and all their accomplishments in life.
He is preceded in death by his parents Freely & Hazel Smith and two brothers, Norman Smith and Donald Smith.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at 2:00pm in Christ Baptist Church, Raleigh. Burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service beginning at 1:00pm.
