Nona was born Nona Mae Roll to William E. Roll, Sr. and Nona Augusta Roll. She grew up in Hyattsville, MD and remained close with childhood friends her whole life. Nona married Rooney Malcom, Jr in September 1962. They settled in Raleigh, NC and raised two daughters. Nona and Rooney enjoyed nearly 45 years together before Rooney passed in 2007. Nona married Carle W. “Woody” Mason, Jr. in 2011 and loved her expanded family circle.
Nona was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend, and she was a world-class caregiver. She adored her children and grandchildren and was always thrilled to spend time with them.
She was active in her churches over the years and served as both a deacon and an elder in the Presbyterian church. As a young mother, Nona kept the nursery during classes that enabled spouses of international North Carolina State University students and faculty to learn English. Nona also worked for several years with the Raleigh, NC ministry Loaves & Fishes.
Nona loved to travel and was able to travel widely later in life. She even made it to Antarctica in 1996. Upon her marriage to Woody, she moved to Croasdaile Village Retirement Community in Durham where she enjoyed meeting new friends, participating in the many activities, singing in the Chorale, playing in the Rusty Pipes band, and entertaining friends. Nona’s enthusiasm and love of life will be dearly missed.
She is survived by Woody Mason, Bill Roll, Julie Trotter, Liz and Rocky Cooke, Mary Claudia and Scott Huntley, Chip and Catherine Mason, Dave and Cate Mason, Brittany Trotter, Sarah Trotter Moore, Amora Moore, Harrison and Michelle Huntley, Will and Erin Huntley, Catie Mason, Caroline and Trevor Rose, and many additional extended family and friends who love her dearly.
