Nila was born and raised in Logan, West Virginia. Later, she moved with family to Richmond, Virginia and lived there for many years, amongst other places, before moving to Raleigh four years ago. She began her career as a teacher before staying at home to pursue her highest calling of wife, mother, and homemaker. Later with her children raised, she returned to Baker Elementary School in Richmond and taught for nine years before her retirement.
Nila loved to cook and enjoyed hosting her family for the holidays and family get-togethers. She also enjoyed reading, collecting dolls, and watching her grandchildren play sports and participate in various activities. Nila knew Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was a member of Providence Baptist Church in Raleigh.
Nila is survived by her three children, Scott Thomas (Gina), Suzanne Walter (Bill), Steve Thomas (Tina); six grandchildren, Jennifer Hostetler (Jared), Lorin Thomas, Jared Thomas, Justin Thomas, Hailey Walter and Taylor Thomas; and three sisters, Kathleen Kinzer, Mary Lou Kinzer and Jennine Hughes (T.K.).
A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 5, from 5 to 7pm, at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, NC. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, December 7, at 2pm, at West Hampton Memorial Park, 10000 Patterson Ave, Richmond, VA.
