Newton graduated from Broughton High School and attended East Carolina on a football scholarship. Newton was a lifelong fan of the "Wolfpack".
Newton is survived by his daughter Tara Nicole Simmons of Creedmoor, brother Jefferson Benjamin Simmons of Raleigh, sister Deborah Knowles of Greensboro, sister Martha Johnson of Charleston, SC, along with many cousins and family from Delaware and Arkansas.
Newton's family and friends will forever miss his kindness, charm and eternal optimistic outlook on life.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 10, from 12-1 p.m. with a memorial service at 1 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, NC. Immediately following the service Newton will be interred at Oakwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
