Nancy Carolyn Wooten was born in Whiteville, NC and reared by her maternal grandparents Dr. Clement LeSesne Wooten and Dr. Thelma Godwin Wooten before moving to Raleigh to pursue a career in North Carolina state government. Nancy worked at the department of Corrections prior to a 12-year career with the State Bureau of Investigation. In 1981 she opened a needle work shop which she operated for two years. She returned to state government serving in the Attorney General’s office and then as administrative assistant and clerk to David H. Daimont, chairman of the Appropriations Committee for the House of Representatives. In 1995 Nancy moved into administration for the Department of Labor before becoming an apprentice and then a compliance officer for OSHA where she retired in March 2013. She touched so many lives though her love of quilting as a talented quilter, quilt teacher, and quilt judge. Her creative writing entertained many of her family and friends.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Denny G. Frye, Jr,; her parents, Julien G. and Clara W. Highsmith, of Brasstown, NC; her brother and his wife, Mose and Joann Highsmith, of Leland, NC; her uncle, D. Elvin Johnson; and cousin, Karen Gayle Johnson, of Garner, NC.
A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at 11AM at Hayes Barton Baptist Church, 1800 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC 27608. The family will receive friends Monday, August 5, 2013 from 6-8PM at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC 27612.
