Murray was born in Butler, Georgia, and he was the youngest of three boys. Between his parents owning the local grocery store, and his paper route, he got to know just about everyone in town. His paper route earnings afforded him the opportunity to purchase a small airplane with his brother, Phil. Many of dad's favorite memories took place in the air and at the Butler airport.
Murray graduated from Georgia Southern College in 1973. There, he met his wife, Jean Walker. After college, they moved to Lumberton, NC for just a couple of years before permanently residing in Raleigh, NC. Professionally, Murray worked in sales at both NCR and SAS Institute, and after retiring from his professional careers, he worked for a brief time as a manager at AutoZone.
Murray was passionate about his family and friends, his southern roots, and the simple joys of life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Murray and Marilyn Walker, and is survived by his wife Jean Walker, and his daughters Robyn Marshall (Craig), Leslie Collins (Chad), and Kelly Shepard (Chris). Murray will also be fondly remembered by his five grandchildren: Lindsay and Seth Marshall, and Owen, Evan, and Eli Collins, as well as his two brothers, Robert H. Walker (Nancy) and Phil Walker (Sue). Murray will also be forever remembered by his nieces, nephews, extended family, and numerous friends.
A Celebration of Life honoring Murray will be held on Saturday, January 12th at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue Raleigh, NC 27612 at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, followed by a reception at the home of Robyn Marshall. Murray was a great story teller, and the family would love for you to share some of your favorite memories of him at the reception.
