Miriam Hollis Prichard was born in Electric Mills, Mississippi on April 17, 1925. Electric Mills was a company town where her father was the principal of the grammar school. She contracted polio at the age of 2 ½ but that never stopped her from pursuing the things she loved.
She lived in Electric Mills until she was 16 when she and her family moved to Chalybeate, Mississippi, where she entered the 11th grade. After graduation, she went to Belhaven Presbyterian College in Jackson Mississippi for 2 years and transferred to Mississippi Baptist College in Clinton, Mississippi.
After graduating from Mississippi College, she taught English for 2 years at the Mississippi State School for the Blind and then entered the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky where she graduated with a Master’s of Religious Education.
After Seminary, she came to North Carolina and trained at the NC Baptist Hospital in Counseling Services. She travelled the State working as a counselor to other religious student workers. She then went to Women’s College in NC as a Baptist Student Counselor.
In 1958, she married Robert Allen Prichard and had 2 children, Hollis Prichard and Kenneth Prichard. She was active with Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, Meredith College Baptist Student Union and hosted many international exchange students from other parts of the World.
She went back to work after her children were older and taught English at Redirection, an alternative school. She enjoyed introducing her students to poetry, particularly Haiku. In later years, she led groups from Pullen Memorial Baptist Church to Iona Scotland which she considered her Spiritual Home. She loved poetry and writing poetry and she was a member of a monthly poetry group that continued even after she moved to Glenaire Skilled Nursing.
She loved her Spiritual Community and developed enduring friendships that remained strong until her passing.
She is survived by her son, Kenneth McCarley Prichard, his wife Heather Prichard, 3 grandchildren, McCarley Prichard, Cara Prichard, Owen Prichard and her daughter Hollis Louise Prichard of CA.
The Prichard Family would like to thank her wonderful caregivers at Glenaire, particularly Cindy and Shirley, for their care and devotion to our mother for the last 8 years.
