Matthew John Carr, age 43, of Delray Beach, Florida passed away suddenly on Monday, August 29, 2022 due to complications of his ongoing battle with Leukemia. Born on October 27, 1978 in Hackensack, NJ; he was the son of John Peter Carr and Linda Ann Hulley Carr, both of Durham. Nothing was more important to him than his friends and family who are beyond heartbroken that he is no longer physically with them. He had a passion for life and loved living. Matthew excelled in all he put his mind and heart into. He was a brilliant, reliable, compassionate, and generous man who had a sense of humor that lit up any room.
Matt graduated from Pascack Valley High School in 1997. He attended Villanova University and graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Finance. Matt was presently working at Guardian where he was highly respected for his outstanding leadership and expertise as Head of Financial Planning & Analysis for Group Benefits and for the camaraderie he fostered at Guardian since 2017.
Matthew met his wife, Jessica Carr, in high school and they reunited in 2014. They were married shortly after in 2015 at City Hall in NYC. In 2018, they welcomed their miracle twins, Lila and Sebastian. In 2020, he moved his family from NYC, a city he knew so well and flourished in, to a cultural hub in a warm state where they could be closer to family and the beach. Matt loved watching his children grow and thrive, and savored every moment of his time with his family. He never stopped fighting, never gave into his diagnosis or let it define him. He simply fought harder.
There was nothing Matt wouldn’t do for his family. He was an excellent and dedicated husband and father who loved cooking, gardening, golfing, swimming and playing other sports with his beloved children. He always put in the extra effort for them and cared for and tended to their every need. They say that to live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. Although he has left his wife and two beautiful children behind, he will always be in their hearts and minds and they will cherish his memory for the rest of their lives.
Matt was not only a loving husband, but also a father, son, brother and will be remembered and missed by a wide circle of friends and colleagues who all adored and respected his quick wit, kindness and intelligence. He touched so many lives during his short time here.
He was preceded in death by his dog Kona, who was much more than a dog to him and his family and no doubt had the best life a dog could have. They were inseparable and he took impeccable care of her as he did everyone. Before she became his guardian angel dog she was loved and cared for by Matt, and then Jessica and the twins, as the circle of her good life grew.
He is survived by his wife and best friend: Jessica C. Carr and their twins, Lila and Sebastian; parents: John P. Carr and Linda H. Carr, of Durham, NC; sisters: Jennifer Trabulsi and husband Brian and Julie Whitehouse and husband David; nieces and nephews: Sophia, Grace and Gabriel Trabulsi and Madeleine and Ryan Whitehouse; and other family and friends.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, September 8th from 4-6 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 9, 2022 at 11 am at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church (11401 Leesville Road in Raleigh, NC). For those unable to attend the service, the church will be offering a live stream option. The link can be found below within the service box.
