Beloved daughter to Robert Woodley and Grace Curling Chapman of Portsmouth, VA, dear sister of Bobette Ogle of Portsmouth, devoted mother of Edward J. Anderson, Jr of Washington, DC, Robert C. Anderson of St. Louis MO, and Susan A. Allen of Conway, SC, and the beloved “Mama Woodie” to 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 2 step-children, 7 step-grandchildren, 8 step-great-grandchildren and to countless friends. She was preceded in death by her 2 husbands, Edward Johnston Anderson and Durant Edward Weston.
Mary moved to Raleigh in 1939 and proudly served the City of Raleigh as a “Welcome Wagon” hostess and became head of the organization before leaving. In 1955 she joined the NC State Employees Retirement System from which she retired after 25 years as the head of the Refund Division. She then volunteered countless hours at Raleigh Community Hospital where she was Volunteer of The Year in 1985. She was a lifetime member of Civitan International and was especially proud of her work with the handicapped through the Happy Time Bowlers and the NC Special Olympics.
Mary was a strong advocate of those less-fortunate among us. Accordingly the family would appreciate gifts to the Capital City Civitan Club (for the Happy Time Bowlers or Special Olympics) PO Box 10814, Raleigh, NC, 27605, or to the Boys and Girls Homes of NC, PO Box 127, Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450, in lieu of flowers.
