Educated at Saint Mary's School & Junior College and Duke University, she married Robert T. Newcomb, Jr., who predeceased her in1996. She was also predeceased by her sister, Lucy Frank Gardner Walker in 2000.
Most of her life was spent in Spring Hope and on her farm in Franklin County. She was devoted to her family and was active in Gibson Memorial Methodist Church. After her children were grown, she worked for Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company for twenty years. She thoroughly enjoyed her work, her co-workers and her clients.
She became a CLU and a CHFC. After moving to Raleigh in 1997, she was confirmed at St. Michael's Episcopal Church. She continued to make boiled custard and apple jelly for sick friends. She loved children, dogs and chocolate. Those wishing to remember her may do so by adopting a homeless dog. showing kindness to an unpleasant relative or sharing a chocolate. She enjoyed her church, her friends, both old and new, and the Scratch Investment Club. She watched the stock market on a daily basis and had a keen eye for investments.
She is survived by her three sons, Robert T. Newcomb III, Allan Randolph Newcomb (Rebecca), James Mason Newcomb (Cindy); seven grandchildren, Katherine Mason Slain (Jonathan), Mary Thompson Newcomb, Allan Bradford Newcomb (Chelsea), Robert T. Newcomb, (Barbara), Charles Everett Newcomb, Alden Hemenway Newcomb, Emily Ann Newcomb; and her six great-grandchildren, William Timberlake Newcomb, Elizabeth Bowen Newcomb, Caroline Lee Slain, Anne Penny Slain, Edward Timothy Newcomb, Rose Randolph Newcomb.
The family deeply appreciates the kindness shown by her caregivers, Rose Keteni, Rose
Madiba, Mabel Dogbe and the staff members of Brighton Gardens.
A memorial service will be held at Saint Michael's Episcopal Church on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends in the church Parrish Hall following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Saint Michael's Episcopal Church, 1520 Canterbury Rd. Raleigh, NC 27608, or the Raleigh Rescue Mission, 314 E. Hargett St., Raleigh, NC 27601.
