Mary Ann Cooper Broughton, 87, of Raleigh died November 6, 2011. A native of Henderson, she was the daughter of the late James Wesley Cooper and Hattie Wooten Cooper. She was graduated from St. Mary’s School and Woman’s College. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, J. Melville Broughton, Jr.
She is survived by two sons, J. Melville Broughton, III, and his wife Ginny, of Raleigh, James Wesley Cooper Broughton, and his wife Grace, of Winston-Salem, a daughter Harriet Broughton Holliday, and her husband William, of Morehead City and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; grandchildren Hattie Wooten Cooper Gruber, New York, NY, Mary Virginia Broughton, Charlotte Hunter Broughton, J. Melville Broughton, IV, all of Raleigh, Mary Ann Cooper Broughton, Grace Belk Broughton, Elizabeth Spotswood Broughton of Winston-Salem; and one sister, Harriet Young Cooper of New York, NY.
The family is grateful to Veronica Kienyi, Lucy Kuria, Elizabeth Muhanda, Anne Murakaru, and Cecilia Muchugu for their devoted care of Mary Ann and to Dr. Steven Liebowitz for his exceptional care and concern.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, November 9th, at 1:00 p.m., All Saints Chapel at St. David’s School, 3400 White Oak Road, Raleigh. Parking on-site will be limited. A shuttle service will be available from the Carolina Country Club, 2500 Glenwood Avenue, beginning at noon.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 8th, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., 1308 Diehl Street, Raleigh.
