Martha L. Burrell December 25, 1921 - May 5, 2016 Raleigh Martha L. Burrell passed away May 5, 2016. She was born December 25, 1921, in Kalamazoo, Michigan to Marion J. Sherwood and Fan Deming Sherwood. Martha spent her childhood in Comstock and Plainwell, Michigan.
She was the first student to graduate from a five year combined course in nursing offered in cooperation with Western Michigan State College (now University) and Bronson Hospital School of Nursing, both in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She also attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Upon graduation she served as an Ensign at the Naval Hospital in San Diego, California. She married Alfred L. Burrell on September 14, 1946. He preceded her in death as did her parents; sister, Marian Ruth Sherwood Burrell; and brother, Karl E. Sherwood. Martha is survived by her children, Alfred J. Burrell (Sandra); Carol Burrell Gramer (Joe); and Janet Burrell Vieira (Sil), and grandchildren Amanda Gramer; Carly Gramer DaCunha (Imar); Scott Vieira; and Jennifer Vieira. She is a former member of First United Methodist Church in Ypsilanti, Michigan where she was involved with and served as past president of United Methodist Women, and she and her husband were active in the choir. Later, she was active in Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, North Carolina where she was a choir and Presbyterian Women member. Martha was a long-time member of P.E.O. serving as past president ofChapter Z in Raleigh, North Carolina.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 3, 2016 at 2:00 p.m., Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church, 4921 Six Forks Rd., Raleigh. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.MitchellatRMP.com
