Marilyn was born in Bethesda, MD on January 11, 1937, graduated from Bethesda/Chevy Chase High School and continued to receive a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Salem College.
Marilyn was married to David Shelton Brown on September 10, 1960. They were very happily married for 41 years until his passing in 2001.
Marilyn was a loving mother, working initially in her home as a piano teacher and eventually founding the North Raleigh Conservatory of Music. This School went on to touch hundreds of lives of all ages (mainly children and young adults) not only in classical piano but in other instruments. Beyond her deep love and dedication to her husband and her Conservatory, she had a huge love to and dedication for Trinity Presbyterian Church of Raleigh, she and David being charter members, playing the piano for services at all occasions, singing in the choir and serving on both Boards of Session and Diaconate.
Marilyn is survived by her children Janelle and spouse, Johnny Powers, of Naples, FL, David Jr. and spouse, Robin Brown, of Wendell, NC and Mary Alison and spouse, Stephen Creech of Fort Wayne, IN; grandchildren Jonathan and spouse, Morgan Powers, Jessica Powers, Nathan, Evan and Zachary Brown, Karleigh, Kayla and Natalie Pierce, Jake and Olivia Creech; great-Grandchildren Jonathan, Henry and Evelyn Powers.
Marilyn is preceded in death by her parents, Frank T. Shull Jr. and Marjorie Shull, her husband David Brown, sister Barbara Hartley, and brothers Frank T. Shull III and George J. Shull.
Marilyn’s celebration of life will be held at 11am on Saturday April 8th at Trinity Presbyterian Church located at 3120 New Hope Road in Raleigh, NC. David Huffman, retired Pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church will be officiating. A reception will be held immediately following the service in the church Fellowship Hall.

The families of Marilyn’s children wish to thank the Brookdale of Wake Forest staff for their incredible love, care and patience that they have provided not only for Marilyn over the past 12 years, but to her family and friends that came on site to visit her. A great thank you to all her students whom she inspired to love classical music and who enriched her life. We hope her infectious energy, love of music, service to others and passion for living life to the fullest was passed on to each of you and will continue in be a part of your lives forever.
