She fought a long, hard, and courageous battle with breast cancer since 2001. As an NC State alumni and member of the Wolfpack Club, Randy was a die-hard Wolfpack fan who loved tailgating for football and basketball games. She was a devoted professional, who loved romance novels, Sudoku, and any puzzle that challenged the mind. As an avid supporter of the Susan G. Komen charity, she regularly participated in the annual Race For the Cure fundraiser in Raleigh. In boating and in life, Randy felt most comfortable taking the helm.
Randy was born on October 12, 1955 in Raleigh at Rex Hospital. She is the child of Samuel Hodges Moss Jr. and Margaret Gay Moss (deceased). She graduated from Salem Academy in 1973 and went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and her Master of Science in Management from N.C. State University in 1977. Randy also received her Chief Information Officer Certification from the University of North Carolina’s School of Government.
Randy dedicated 27 years to the State of North Carolina. In 1998 she became the Chief Information Officer for the N.C. Department of Revenue, a position she held for 11 years. Subsequently, Randy moved to the N.C. Department of Transportation as the Chief Information Officer, before joining the Office of Information Technology Services in 2013. Prior to joining state government, Randy held a variety of positions in the private sector.
Randy is survived by her loving husband of 16 years Brian H. Barnes, three children; Whitney R. Barnes, Rebecca (Erin) Barnes, and Stephen C. Barnes; and 3 brothers in law; Floyd P. Barnes Jr and his wife Debbie of Southport NC, and son Cameron, Charles W. Barnes and his wife Pam of Ridgecrest, CA and sons, Joe and Nick, and Benjamin L.
