Lynwood Taylor Oakes

He is survived by his sisters, Mildred Oakes White of Oak Harbor, WA and Anne Oakes Jenkins of Raleigh; sister-in-law Jeannette Jenkins Oakes of Oxford, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by siblings J.T. Oakes, Mary Delia Oakes Hunt, Elizabeth Oakes Connelly, and Franklin Oakes.

Lynwood graduated from Oxford High School and joined the U.S. Air Force, and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1955. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1958, and a Master of Education degree from The American University in 1970. He was a beloved teacher and principal at Belvedere Elementary in Fairfax, VA for over 25 years.

Special thanks to Joan Bullock and Bobby Allen of Oxford, NC, who cared for Lynwood in his later years. Special thanks also to his nieces and nephews Danny Hunt, Steve Jenkins and Aida Cancel, Randy and Kay Springs, and Nathaniel and Jennifer Parker, as well as all of the staff at Mayview, for the loving care that they showed to Lynwood.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
