Laura Lea Montgomery Black, 91, passed away to be with her Saviour Jesus Christ on August 9, 2012 at her daughters home, surrounded by her family. Laura Lea was born June 6, 1921 in Arapahoe, Nebraska. Raised in Fremont, Indiana, one of two daughters to Georgie O. and Philip H. Montgomery. Laura Lea is preceded in death by her husband, William James on September 10, 1983. She is survived by; her daughter Beverly Black Purvis, of Raleigh, NC; son Philip Robert Black and wife Debbie of Willow Springs, NC; sister, Bronna Beth Bowling of Fort Wayne, IN (four nieces); and three grandchildren, Christina Barahona and her husband Milton Alex, of Smithfield, NC; Elizabeth Cisneros-Purvis and her husband Victor, of Raleigh, NC; and James Robert Black, of Willow Springs, NC.
Laura Lea taught school for 33 years. She was very attentive to her students, even visiting them at home if they were sick. She was a very inspirational woman, and would try to help anyone in need. She was also a very active member of St. Marks United Methodist Church for over 40 years. She loved serving her church where she was most active as President of UMW-Mary Mark Circle, delivering Meals on Wheels until she was 89 years old. She traveled quite frequently with the Third Agers of Millbrook United Methodist Church until 2011 and was President of the Quail Hollow Senior Club for years through the Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department.
Laura Lea’s family will receive friends 6-8 PM Monday, August 13, 2012 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Rd., Raleigh, NC 27609. A memorial service to celebrate Laura Lea’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 4801 Six Forks Rd., Raleigh, NC 27609. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 AM, at the church.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church Building Fund.
