Mr. Hall was born on June 11, 1928, in Williamson, W.Va., the son of the late Evan and Maude Hall. He attended Washington and Lee University and graduated from Marshall University where he was an all-conference lineman on the football team. While at Marshall, he served as president of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.
Mr. Hall served in the U.S. Army following World War II as a rifleman and assistant squad leader with the 350th Infantry Regiment of the 88th Infantry Division. He was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal.
He was employed by Nationwide Insurance for nearly 37 years. His career began May 4, 1953, as an underwriter in Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Hall also worked for Nationwide in Charleston, W.Va, White Plains, N.Y., and Lynchburg, Va. He retired in 1990 as Regional Personnel and Public Relations Manager in Raleigh. He earned the CPCU and CLU designations and was a contributor to insurance industry textbooks. He taught Dale Carnegie Courses to inmates at the Ohio State Penitentiary.
Mr. Hall is survived by his wife, Lois Lovell Hall; daughter, Linda Heller, and her husband Jim, of Naperville, Ill.; two sons, Steve Hall, and his wife Lauren, of Midlothian, Va., and Stuart Hall, and his wife Lisa, of Cary; three grandchildren, Sarah Hall Heller of Urbana, Ill., and Allison and Riley Hall, both of Cary; and a sister, Phyllis Hall League of Bel Air, Md. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Gene Hall and David Hall, and a sister, Evelyn Hall Shawver.
Mr. Hall was a voracious reader and a fierce competitor who loved playing sports and games with his friends and family. Golf held a special place in his heart, and he played at every opportunity, scoring a best-ever 73 at Raleigh Country Club.
There will be a visitation at Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7209 Glenwood Ave. in Raleigh, from 2-3 p.m. on Thursday, March 31. A memorial service will be held immediately afterward at the Mausoleum Chapel of Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Ave. in Raleigh. The Rev. Owen Barrow, pastor at Apex United Methodist Church, will preside.
