Lacy was born on August 20, 1943, in Durham, NC to Archie and Ollie Ferrell Black. The first of three girls, Lacy loved her sisters Linda Black Pearce and Dianne Black Barnette and took being the older sibling to heart, often serving as a second mom to both Linda and Dianne.
Post high school, Lacy married Bob Shepherd and they both traveled to Scotland, as Bob was an Air Force Security Service member. After Bob’s honorable service, Lacy and Bob moved to Maryland. During this time, she also became an aunt and adored her niece and nephews, Teresa Barnette Allen, Toby and Randy Barnette and David and Tony Pearce. She spent time visiting NC regularly to be a part of their lives and spoil them like aunts do, continuing that tradition with her six great nieces/nephews. Lacy had a best friend Emma who was like her sister that was by her side until Emma’s passing. Lacy loved her three children, Trey, Holly, and Benoit, actively involved in their life.
Lacy remarried Ben Roberts and took on the duties of stepmom to Cindy and Pam, Ben’s two young daughters. Lacy also gained two amazing step-grandchildren Brooke and Ryan whom she adored from Ben’s older son Harvey and wife Tammy. Then in 2009, Lacy took in the joy and light of her life, Pam’s 8-year-old son, Austin Mason.
Even with full-time employment, Lacy, known to Austin as Mom-Mom, made time for 10 years of doctor appointments, baseball, basketball, and band. Lacy also found time to take Austin on trips to NC, Disney World, and Jolly Rogers as well as celebrating other memorable occasions.
During this time Lacy met Mark Behan who she loved dearly. Together they created wonderful memories including trips to NC to visit Lacy’s family. Many years later Mark married Margie who became a dear friend as well for Lacy. Mark and Margie cared for Lacy in Maryland, making her laugh, cooking and caring for Lacy as her health declined, never leaving her side.
While on the shore, Lacy worked at Coldwater Seafood for a few years and Salisbury Steel for over 20 years of faithful service, until their closing. Lacy’s last full-time job was Trusted Agent for Homeland Security over the TWIC program. After the MVA took over the duties of the TWIC department, Lacy worked for Delmarva Shredding until her retirement. Lacy attended Central Baptist Church, led by Pastor Bo Helms, in Melfa, VA when she was able. Lacy transitioned, in the company of friends, to be with the Lord, on May 11, 2024.
