Kyra Denise Greene, age 68, of Cary, North Carolina passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, September 4, 2023. Kyra was born in Harlem, New York on September 17, 1954. She was the third of eight children.
Kyra was the mother of 2 children, a daughter Solange, and a son, Gregory who was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 18 months. Shortly after receiving her son’s diagnosis, Kyra decided to take classes to learn more about developmental disabilities. She soon discovered she had a passion for working with children with special needs.
She worked at Whetstone Elementary in Montgomery Village, MD as a teacher’s aide where she enjoyed watching her students learn and thrive. After working in the school system for several years, she moved to North Carolina where she worked as an Accountant Tech at the Department of Corrections. Kyra would be the first to tell anyone that she had no idea how she ended up in that career, but God provided her with the opportunity and equipped her with the tools needed for success. She remained at D.O.C. for several years before returning to her passion of working with special needs children. She worked at Kingswood Elementary in Cary, North Carolina briefly before retiring.
Kyra had a fighting spirit, which made people uncomfortable at times, but she believed that people should be treated fairly and that they should honor their word and she had no problem holding those that did not accountable. That fighting spirit allowed her to be a fierce advocate for her son and carried her through life’s challenges, including her 2001 battle with breast cancer. By God’s grace she was able to come through on the other side of that battle and she never forgot to give God the praise for bringing her through.
Kyra was boisterous, funny, steadfast and generous. She never shied away from an opportunity to help others. Kyra had an uncompromising love for God and her children. She enjoyed reading God’s Word, listening to worship music, watching action movies and spending time with people who brought her joy. She is survived by her loving children and friends who will miss her tremendously.
The children would like to thank Transitions Hospice Care for the care and compassion they showed our loved one in their final days. Their support was a light in those dark days.
A graveside service for Kyra was held Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at Raleigh Memorial Park & Mitchell Funeral Home, 7501 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, NC 27612.
