He was born in Salisbury, NC to Hiram and Ethel Dewalt. His family moved to Charlotte in 1938. After graduating from Harding High School in 1942, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corp in 1943 where he served in the South Pacific during WWII. After an honorable discharge in 1946, he attended Carolina Business School. After graduating, he started his employment with NCR in 1946. On July 19, 1947, he married the love of his life, Betty Sue Porter and then retired from NCR on March 31, 1990.
He was a member of Crabtree Valley Baptist Church in Raleigh and a member of the Capitol City Civitan in Raleigh for over 50 years and an avid golfer. After retirement, he was a volunteer at Rex Hospital for 12 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Martha Millan.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Sue Dewalt; sister, Shirley Sharpe of Spartanburg, SC; son, Kenneth W. Dewalt, Jr. and wife Kathy; daughter, Terry Wilson and husband Tommy, of Wake Forest. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Monday from 6-8 PM at Mitchell Funeral Home, with Funeral Services on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at 2 PM at Crabtree Valley Baptist Church. Interment, with Military Honors, to follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
