Kathy Lynn Hartenstine, 68, of Raleigh passed away Sunday, September 23, 2018, surrounded by her family. She was born in Tampa, Florida, to the late John and Julia Hartenstine. She grew up in Sarasota, Florida, and lived most of her adult life in Raleigh. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister and lifelong educator. She was a graduate of Barton College and received her M.Ed from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She spent more than 35 years as a teacher and principal in the Wake County school system. Following her retirement, she served as a member of the Wake County School Board. Her love for students and for public schools was apparent to everyone who met her.
She is survived by her daughters, Melissa Hayes and husband, Chris, and Julie Gupton and husband, Tim; her grandchildren, Lawson and Rives Hayes and Kyler and Brady Gupton; and her brothers, Michael Hartenstine and wife Mary Jane and Jim Hartenstine and fiancée Linda Griffin.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, September 29, 2018, at Hayes Barton Baptist Church, 1800 Glenwood Ave. in Raleigh. The family will receive guests immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.
