Kathryn Elizabeth Sayer Young, 94, died on December 11, 2013 after a long and rewarding life. She was born December 2, 1919 in Wilkes County, Georgia to the late Ralph E. Sayer and Nellie Garrett Sayer and grew up in Wilkes County. She attended Berry College, where she met her husband, Talmage B. Young. Kathryn and Talmage enjoyed 59 very happy years together until his death in 1999.
Kathryn always saw the best in everyone she knew. She lovingly supported her family and encouraged education. Kathryn was a creative seamstress and flower arranger. A perfectionist in everything, she set high goals for her family and helped them achieve those goals. Beyond the love of family and friends, Kathryn enjoyed gardening, arranging flowers, and judging flower shows. She was a member of Peddle Pushers and The Raleigh Garden Club, The Camilla Society, and Ikebana International. She arranged flowers for her churches, Forest Hills Baptist and Raleigh Church of Christ. She decorated the Governor’s Mansion and NC State Capitol, and judged many flower shows at the NC State Fair. Kathryn generously gave flowers and plants to family, friends, and even strangers. Her gardens were always lush with flowers.
Kathryn was predeceased by her husband, Talmage B. Young, brother Ralph Sayer and her infant sister Rosalind.
Kathryn is survived by brother, Emory Sayer (Henry), daughters Gloria Y. Perkinson (Jarvis) and Alice Y. Scales (Glenn). Kathryn is survived by her five grandchildren, Deborah Johnson, Karen Bowman (Wally), Donna Matthews (Glenn), Emily Scales, and David Scales. Kathryn is by survived four great-grandchildren, Heather Boykin (Evan), Kevin Ricks (Tracey), Christian Mayes, and Luke Johnson. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the loving and skilled caregivers at her home and at Elsie’s Place that provided such wonderful care and support in Kathryn’s declining years.
Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, December 15, 2013 at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, with visitation to start at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
