2021 at Falls River Court in Raleigh, NC. Kay was born in
Lexington County, SC on May 31, 1940. In the summer of 1957
she met Bill, her future partner for life. They were married on
March 17, 1959. After their marriage Kay pursued a B.A. in
education and Bill a PH.D. in chemistry at the University of
Georgia in Athens. After their graduations Kay became an Army
wife while Bill served in the US Army stationed in San Juan,
Puerto Rico. During this period their son, William M. Walter III
was born. In 1965 the family moved to Raleigh, NC where Bill
had accepted a position with the U.S. Department of Agriculture
and N. C. State University. Once there Kay nurtured their son and
made their home a comfortable and loving place. Kay then went
back to school and obtained an M.S. in Psychology and an M.Ed.
in Special Education from N. C. State University. In the interim
she taught in the Wake County Public School System and finally
she taught at The Governor Morehead School. She made
teaching the blind and visually impaired students at Governor
Morehead School her passion and was very successful at lifting
her students’ capabilities. Kay was active in the teaching
profession and recognized by initiation into the Eta Chapter of
Delta Kappa Gamma. She also was an active member of the Sir
Walter Lioness Club.
In her retirement she remained a staunch advocate for the
blind and visually impaired. Above all she had a strong affinity for
children of all colors and sizes. She never met a child she didn’t
treat like an old friend. This world has lost one of its true good
people.
Besides her parents Clarence and Crystle Hall, Kay was
predeceased by her sister, Ruth Hinton and nephews Jody Hall
and Keith Hinton. She is survived by her husband of 62 years,
William M. Walter, Jr., her son William M. Walter III, her sister
Betty Harvin and brother-in-law Sep Harvin, her brother Deryl Hall
and sister-in-law Lynda Fey Hall, brother Joe Hall, sister Barbara
Hall, and her beloved nieces and nephews.
