Josephine Haag, known as ‘Ms. Jo’ to so many, is remembered by her family as a caring and loving Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother. She was born in Narrows, VA, and spent much of her childhood on the family farm in Bland County, Virginia. This farm, received in a land grant from the Virginia governor, Patrick Henry, is still owned by the 7th generation of her Groseclose family that immigrated from Germany. Her ancestor, Henry C Groseclose, is recognized as the founder of the FFA, Future Farmers of America. While the farm was a major part of her family history, Ms. Jo’s life’s passion was taking care of children starting with her own children, ‘Donnie and Cherie’ and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and then countless children who were nurtured and taught by her. Ms Jo had a gift for working with children and shared this in the many locales where they lived during her husband’s (Tom) career, including New York, North Carolina and England. No matter where her family was located, she created a home and found a way to teach children. She touched so many lives as she served as a director of church preschools, created Jo’s Preschool in the basement of her home, and taught Sunday School, Mission groups and Vacation Bible Schools. Ultimately, she and her husband owned and operated Childworks Daycare for over 30 years. She loved children and they loved her.
Her parents were Ralph and Elizabeth Groseclose Graves, and her aunts and uncles were Mae and Perry Groseclose, Ruth and Mac Thomas, and Conrad Groseclose. She is remembered by her children, Donald Haag and wife Linda Haag; Cheryl Walker and husband Randy Walker; her grandchildren, Christopher and Melanie Haag, Aimee and David Hight, Brian and Hannah Walker, and Ashley and Tyler Humphries; and great-grandchildren, Emily and Kayli Haag and Tripp Hight.
A memorial service will be held at Crabtree Valley Baptist Church, 4408 Leadmine Rd, Raleigh NC at 11am Saturday, February 26, 2022 with visitation before the service at 10am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Crabtree Valley Baptist Church.
