Jonathan P. Gorman of Raleigh, NC passed away on June 13, 2023 at the age of 57. He was born on June 2, 1966 in Peoria, IL where he grew up. After graduation from Bergan High School, Jon attended and graduated from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1990.
Jon proudly served his country in the Reserves and National Guard as an airman and Lieutenant and retired as a CW4. He was a ROMAD and TACP early in his career but loved to fly and completed Army Aviation Flight school in 1995. It was his great joy to fly 6 of the Army’s helicopters to include CH-47D, UH-60A, UH-72A, and OH-58A and TH-67. He flew the Apache Longbow during his deployment to Iraq in 2010 and then served as a Counter Drug Aviator after he returned to North Carolina. While he was in the National Guard, he also worked as a Senior Product Manager at John Deere & Co. and was instrumental in the development of the military gator all-terrain vehicle.
Jon was a devoted father and loved spending time with his son Lucas. Together they had fun restoring cars and participating in the Y-Guides tribe. Jon greatly enjoyed volunteering with the 9:57 project–an educational program that engages students and military veterans with the legacy of courage from the 9/11 attacks. Jon never met a dog he did not love and was happiest volunteering with Emily and Lucas at Saving Grace NC, a local animal rescue organization dear to his heart.
Jon is preceded in death by his adoptive mother, Judith Gorman and his birth mother Donna Normoyle.
Jon is survived by his beloved wife Emily, Lucas, and adoptive father Timothy Gorman. After reuniting with his birth mother, Jon formed a close bond with her sister Beryl Wilson, her brother George, and George’s wife Chris Criswell.
For the last year of his life, Jon was cared for with love by the amazing staff at Avendelle Assisted Living and Emily and Lucas are deeply grateful for this wonderful home.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at Church of the Nativity 8849 Ray Rd Raleigh, NC 27613 on Saturday June 24 at 2:00 pm. You are welcome to gather with friends and family after the service next door at the church.
