

He was born December 8, 1933, in his family home in Albemarle, NC, Stanly County, to the late Marshall Taylor Poplin and Beulah Burleson Poplin. In his youth he was an Eagle Scout, and attended Endy High School in Albemarle, NC. Following high school graduation in 1952 he worked in the Albemarle Wiscasset Hosiery Mill during the summer of that year. In attended Kings Business College in Charlotte in the fall of 1952 and graduated from there a year later in 1953.
He was drafted into the Army in October 1953. After basic training he was transferred to the Headquarters Company at Fort Bragg, NC to work in the Finance Office until he was discharged in August 1955.
After the Army, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated in 1959 with a BS degree in Business Administration with a Concentration in Accounting. While attending UNC he met Louise Whatley, who he married on June 19, 1957.
After graduating from UNC he worked for an accounting firm in Greensboro, NC from 1959 to 1960. In 1961 he accepted an accounting position with the North Carolina State Highway Commission located in Raleigh. He was promoted to General Accounting Supervisor in 1963 and subsequently promoted to Auditor in the Internal Audit section. 1n 1970 he was promoted to the position of Assistant Budget Officer with the North Carolina Division of Health Services and promoted to Budget Officer in 1972, which he remained in this position until he retired from the State in 1989. Since retiring from the State, he worked part time for an accounting firm preparing tax returns.
He attended and supported Forest Hills Baptist Church in Raleigh for over 30 years, and was a long-standing member of the Lawndale Baptist Church in Greensboro. He also attended Poplin Grove Baptist Church in Albemarle.
Johnny is survived by his wife of 56 years, Louise Whatley Poplin; his daughters, Suzanne (Haslet,Texas) and Jeannie (Raleigh), sons-in-law Jason Waldrep (Suzanne’s husband) and Henry Hutton (Jeannie’s Husband). Survivors also include three grandsons, Johnny Hugh Marshall Waldrep, Matthew Taylor Hutton and Mitchell Davis Hutton. He is further survived by two brothers, James Eddie Poplin and Buddy Poplin, nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
There will be a family visitation on Tuesday, January 14th, from 7-9 pm at the Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary's Street in Raleigh. On Wednesday, January 15th, the day will begin with an 11am memorial service at Forest Hills Baptist Church in Raleigh, followed by a 4pm graveside service for family and friends at the Poplin Grove Baptist Church. The family will then receive friends for visitation in the Fellowship Hall at Poplin Grove.
Pastors officiating will be Reverend Neil Westbrook at Forest Hills Baptist Church and Reverend Richard Carlisle at Poplin Grove Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Forest Hills Baptist Church or Poplin Grove Baptist Church.
