John is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Ann Collar of Charlotte, NC; his children from prior marriage to Edna Lee Collar are twin daughters, Kimberly Holmes of Ringwood, NJ and Kathy Reintgen of Raleigh, NC; son, John H. Collar III (Lynn) of Raleigh, NC; twin sister, Shirley Bilby of Washington, PA; niece, Candace Tarr of Washington, PA; grandchildren, Cameron Collar, Jeremy Collar, and Trevor Holmes; step-children, Carla Shober (Steve), and Garrett Smith; and step-grandchildren, Summer Smith, Madeline Shober, Fulton Shober and Harrison Shober; and John's four-legged companion, Sable.
John was an outstanding athlete growing up in Washington, PA., lettering in football, basketball, baseball and track. His love of football brought him South to Raleigh in 1955 as a recruit with the NC State football team. He was selected to the All-ACC Football Team in 1955-’56 & `57, played in the Blue Gray Bowl Game, named to the All-Southeast Football Team and AP-UP Honorable Mention All-American. In 2004, John was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
After college John had a successful career in sales mainly involving menswear working with Hudson Belk, Nike, and S&K Menswear. John loved people and continued working into his early 80's as a driver with Quest Laboratories. In his spare time John enjoyed playing golf, perhaps the sport he was most passionate about.
John was a member of Quail Hollow Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 30, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Quail Hollow Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Quail Hollow Presbyterian Church, 8801 Park Rd. Charlotte, NC 28210.
Service arrangements are being handled by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary's St. Raleigh, NC.
