John was born in Durham on April 27th, 1938 to Leonard Rollins and Edna Sykes Carter. He graduated from Durham High School and attended Duke University and the University of Virginia. He also served in the United States Army. He worked with Hahn Mason Air Systems for 35 years, having been manager of the Raleigh office for most of that time. He was also a lifetime member of ASHRAE.
John loved life and lived it to its fullest. Family and friends were the utmost to John. In addition, he loved Duke University, playing tennis, playing bridge, dancing, going to Las Vegas and doing anything that made life the very best.
In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by a brother, Rollins Sykes Carter and his wife, Joyce.
Left to cherish John’s memory is his wife, Lucille Edwards Carter; two sons, John Thurston “Chip” Carter of San Diego, CA; and David Lee Carter of Raleigh; a brother, James Leonard Carter, and his wife, Jean, of Chapel Hill; a niece, Susan Carter Spain, and her husband, Robert, of Conway, SC; and a nephew Mark Rollins Carter and his wife, Teresa of Pisgah Forest, NC; and his faithful friend, Leo. In addition, he leaves behind a very large Edwards family, all of whom loved him very much.
A memorial service for John will be held on Wednesday, March 16th, at 2:00 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary’s Street in Raleigh. Visitation at the funeral home will follow.
