Richard Altman of Raleigh NC died on May 1, 2016 after a lengthy illness. Richard was born to the late Purdy David and Marguerite Wideman Altman. Raised in Galivants Ferry, SC, he graduated from Aynor High School, Aynor, SC (class of 1954) and the University of Georgia at Athens, GA (class of 1960). Although Richard was raised in South Carolina, he held a strong affection for North Carolina and spent the better part of his adult life in Raleigh. As the retired founder and CEO of JR Altman and Associates, Richard also held the designation of Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU).
He is survived by his wife Patricia Keaton Winn Altman; Sons: Richard Scott Altman and wife Anne of Raleigh, John Kenneth Altman and wife Sandy of Clayton; Daughters: Amy Altman Patterson and husband John of Charleston SC, daughter by marriage Clair Winn Green and husband Benji of Raleigh, and daughter-in-law by marriage Paige Layno Winn of Raleigh. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, who knew him affectionately as “Pops”: Richard Scott Altman Jr., Samantha Jordan Patterson, William Marshal Altman, Jacob Frank Altman, Sara Marguerite Altman, Katharine Irma Altman, Caroline Tanner Patterson, Emma Clair Green, and Bryan Keaton Green.
Richard was predeceased by his first wife, Irma Hucks Altman, a son by marriage Daniel Lee Winn, and a brother Robert Donald Altman.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 5th from 10:00 – 11:45 AM at Trinity Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 4815 Six Forks Road, Raleigh. A service will immediately follow the visitation at 12:00 noon within the church sanctuary. Internment is scheduled for Thursday, May 5th at 3:00 PM at Oakwood Cemetery, 701 Oakwood Avenue, Raleigh.
