Jill Daugherty Shipman died peacefully at Transitions Lifecare on January 12, 2019. Her amazing spirit, positive energy and caring attitude will be carried on by all fortunate to have known and loved her.
Jill was born August 26, 1965 in White Plains, New York and moved to Raleigh in 1973. As a youth she was very competitive and active in multiple sports including golf, softball, basketball, and volleyball. Her biggest passion was for soccer as a longtime member of the Defeaters soccer team. She carried this competitive spirit through high school at Millbrook and as a scholarship volleyball player at Wake Forest University. She graduated with a degree in Psychology and went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from UNC Chapel Hill.
Professionally Jill used her compassion and empathy in the field of counseling at Rex Hospital. As the Director of RexAware, she and her department provided support for hospital employees and their families as an Employee Assistance Program. Jill eventually moved to the Rex Cancer Center counseling patients and their loved ones. She also coordinated KidsCan!, a program to provide education, emotional support, peer empathy, and inspiration for children with a parent having cancer.
In her personal life, Jill adored her family and most enjoyed spending time with them and friends. Whether on vacation or simply entertaining at home, Jill had a vibrant spirit and personality which was enjoyed by all. She also took up amateur photography, providing a lifetime of memories for close ones to cherish.
Jill is survived by her husband Jim, daughter Megan, son Andrew, mother Marlene, father Richard, brother Scott (Lisa), brother Eric (Debbie) and mother-in-law Barbara.
