Survived by his wife of 51 years, June Smith Goodwin from Duplin County, and his three children, Cynthia Goodwin, Bryan Goodwin and wife Megan, and Elizabeth Tyler and husband Toby. Also his four most adored grandchildren, Logan and Morgan Tyler, Brandon and Owen Comstock.
Jerry was born in Chatham County to his parents David and Eula Goodwin. The youngest of five children, three of which have preceded him in death, Marjorie Tudor, Vivian Ellis and Willie Mae Goodwin. His brother David Goodwin. Jerry graduated from Moncure High School and even had yearly reunions with his small class of friends of which he will truly be missed.
He served our country as a U.S. Navy "Fighting Seabee". He attended NC State University before settling in and getting his degree from King's Business College. Trained as an accountant but always the entrepreneur. He was best known for the neighborhood restaurant he created, Jerry's Wooden Nickel which became the cornerstone of the community. He went on to make a living in construction and ended up retiring after working for the ND DOT engineering department. An Icon of Brentwood, he was recently deemed, he was an affectionate man to all he knew and loved. An adventurous man almost to fault, and he attributed his greatest happiness to his family.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm this Saturday, Dec. 21st at Brown-Wynne Funeral Homes at 1701 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh NC 27609. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2pm at his church Trinity Presbyterian at 3120 N. New Hope Road, Raleigh, NC 27604.
