Jeanette was born in Tipton, Indiana, the daughter of Garnet and Cora Mae Jones. She grew up in Tipton with her grandparents, Cleo and Lelah Jones. Jeanette graduated from Tipton High School in 1954 where she met and eventually married her husband of 61 years, Charles ‘Chuck’ Sloan. The high school sweethearts both lived on Maple Street, four blocks apart. A ‘Blue Devil’ sundae at the Blue Front soda shop and a movie at the Diana theater were typical date night activities. Jeanette and Chuck were married in Tipton at West Street Christian Church in 1955.
Jeanette was a devoted military wife. Upon Chuck’s graduation from college, he entered into his career as an officer in the United States Army. Jeanette and Chuck moved 23 times during their 20-year Army tour. Even today, their three children proudly identify as Army ‘brats.’ Scott was born at Fort Wainwright, Alaska in 1961; Lisa at Fort Eustis, Virginia in 1964; and Steven at Fort Eustis, Virginia in 1971. Jeanette and Chuck moved to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1976 upon Chuck’s military retirement.
Jeanette was an exemplary mother to her three children. Her family meant the world to her. While Chuck was serving his two tours in Vietnam, she had the awesome responsibility of raising the family alone during the uncertainty of war. Her children took comfort in her strength and guidance throughout her entire life. She never stopped being their mother, something for which they are eternally grateful.
In addition to raising her family, Jeanette had several part-time jobs in Raleigh. She volunteered at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and was a strong advocate for the Meals On Wheels program. Jeanette took pride in everything she did, especially her cooking. In her military days, she was known for throwing lavish, first class parties. She was the very definition of hospitality. No matter how brief, anyone who ever visited her home and was lucky enough to meet her left feeling welcome and loved – like family.
Jeanette was preceded in death by her husband Chuck; her father Garnet; her mother Cora Mae; and her brother Allen Lee Jones.
Jeanette is survived by her son Scott; her daughter Lisa Gray and her husband Bunn; her grandson Kyle, his wife Nicole, and their son Austin; her grandson Tyler, his wife Nikki, and their son Callen; her granddaughter Kara; her son Steven, his wife Cindy, and their children Gabi, Evan, and Cameron; and her brother Steve Beebe and his wife Christi.
The family will celebrate Jeanette’s wonderful 86 years with a private service. We thank friends and family near and far for all of their love and support over the years. Jeanette was dearly loved by many, and she will be heartbreakingly missed by all.
