Within those 74 years, Jane did a whole lot of living and loving! Relationships with family and friends were the biggest part of her life. She made time for adventures and get-togethers, and stayed connected through phone calls, letters, texts, and FaceBook.
Graduating Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Urban & Regional Planning from East Carolina University in 1988 at the age of 40 was an achievement Jane was very proud of. For nearly two decades, she built a career in her field working in Washington, NC, Carolina Beach, NC and Oak Island, NC before retiring to Fuquay-Varina in 2006.
As proud as she was of her accomplishments, Jane was a fun, vibrant woman whose interests are too vast to fully catalog, but included: Being in, on, or near the water. Music that moved her (often singing along and/or playing guitar). Dancing! Driving the meandering back roads. Playing tennis. Writing thought provoking poetry. Playing cards with friends and family. Traveling the US and beyond. Tormenting herself with a challenging puzzle. So much laughter! Enjoying good conversation over a meal and glass of wine. Making a day of perusing the Art Museum, followed by lunch in the cafe, then walking the trails on the grounds.
In her lifetime she was a daughter, sister, cousin, aunt, friend, co-worker, wife, mother, ex wife, step mother, mother-in-law and grandmother. Everyone that knew and loved Jane had their own unique relationship with her.
To her children, she was the smart, funny, beautiful young mother who figured it out as she went and did the very best she could. Jane showed her humanity at every turn, but to them she was also the sun, moon, and stars in the sky. The cool drink of water on a hot summer day. A warm blanket on cold, rainy nights. A safe place to land. That well-timed burst of laughter when life gets too serious! She was the most loving, supportive, influence in their lives.
Jane is survived by her loving children: Jennifer (Jenny) Jacoby and her wife Jenn Taylor (Lancaster, PA), Matthew (Matt) Jacoby (Richmond, VA), Stephanie (Tess) Jacoby Cameron and her partner Stefan Supinski (Raleigh, NC). Grandchildren: Elizabeth Ryan (Raleigh, NC), Michael Perry (Lincolnton, NC) Brother: Eric H. Bruton, Jr (Raleigh, NC) Beloved cousin & best friend: Shirley Bruton Wright and husband Keith (North Myrtle Beach, SC) and their children Jill Wright and Ashley Jakowczuk. Step-mother: Mary Lee Cribb Bruton. And a host of family and friends too numerous to name, but so very dear to her!
As was her wish, Jane will be cremated with no interment. A Celebration of Life will be held at the NC Museum of Art in Raleigh, NC on Sunday, January 14, 2024 from 11-2pm with service starting at 11:30am. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Jane’s name to one of the following organizations: PBS North Carolina, ECU Dept of Urban Planning, or perhaps the NC Museum of Art, which became a big part of Jane's life in the last several years.
