Fred was born and raised in Dobson NC, and he was a proud graduate of North Carolina State University. He had been in declining health for several years.
He loved long drives, the outdoors, hunting and any new technology gadget. Fred was employed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation for 33 years and retired from the Traffic Engineering and Safety Systems Branch (now the Mobility and Safety Division) as the Traffic Safety Unit Head. He was known as a Champion for Highway Safety, and during his career with NCDOT he advocated for improved technology, better traffic records and crash data, and increased utilization of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). For his tireless efforts and commitment to public service Fred was known as the “Grandfather” of NCDOT’s Safety Management and Municipal Traffic Support efforts.
He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend. Fred is survived by his wife Annie Lou Fowler Rosendahl, Two sons Mark (Maren) of Anthem, AZ, and Jay Alexander of Raleigh, NC, Seven grandchildren Mark Chandler of Denver, Colorado, Lauren Ann of Anthem Arizona, Kiernan Alexander of Wilmington, NC, Auriella Elise of Boone, NC, Cameron James of Anthem Arizona, Emma Brynn of Wilmington, NC and Connor Andrew of Anthem, AZ.
