Jim’s career started at Douglas Aircraft Company in Charlotte. In 1966, he came to Raleigh to work with IBM, where he retired as a manager in industrial engineering in 1992.
Jim was an avid Wolfpack supporter. He and Shirley followed the Pack with season tickets to football, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball for more than 50 years. Jim was often heard saying “I’ve only missed 2 games since Carter-Finley Stadium opened.” He and his extended family always loved tailgating together.
Jim coached Pop Warner football for several years. After retirement, he discovered his love for gardening and joined the Gardeners of Wake County. He always enjoyed his involvement with the chrysanthemums at the State Fair. He drove cancer patients for Road to Recovery for many years. Jim loved bowling and was on leagues in Charlotte and Raleigh. He also loved golf and spent 25 years with his friends on “Freddie’s Golf Trips.”
Jim and Shirley lived on Huntingdon Drive for 51 years, where they created a showcase yard and made lifelong friends. In 2017 they moved to Springmoor where he continued to enjoy gardening and reading on the back patio.
Jim’s greatest love was for his family. The family loved being together at their cottage on the Neuse River, which highlighted his woodworking skills. They also enjoyed many family trips together. His grandchildren were Chris Sheppard (Emily), Paul Herrin (Sarah Lee), Michael Sheppard (Katie) and Morgan Balistreri (Zack).
