Jim Marks, 73, died at his home in Clayton on Friday. Jim was born in Raleigh to Margaret Carter Marks and Lee McDonald Marks. He was a graduate of North Carolina State University, earning a Bachelors Degree in Engineering. He served as a Lieutenant in the Navy and went on to work for IBM for 25 years. He raised his family in Raleigh where he grew up.
Jim was a talented woodworker, and a “tinkerer” always fixing things himself and learning how things worked. He was an avid Wolfpack fan and faithfully attended NCSU football games each season. Family and friends meant everything to him. Jim and his extended family attended reunions annually at Emerald Isle, NC for over 40 years.
One of his favorite past times was observing bluebirds in his own backyard. He encouraged their survival by sharing hand made bluebird houses with countless neighbors and friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife Polly Marks. Jim is survived by his daughters: Jennifer Iglio and her husband, Jeff of Raleigh; Rebecca Pittman and her husband, Lee of Pinehurst. In addition, Jim is survived by his five grandchildren, Walker and Connor Iglio, Abby and Will Pittman, and Hannah Butkus. Also surviving is his companion, Sandi Hardin, of Wrightsville Beach, NC.
A family visitation is scheduled for 6 pm Wednesday, September 11, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E Millbrook Rd, Raleigh, NC. A funeral is scheduled for 2 pm Thursday, September 12, also at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on Millbrook Rd. Burial will immediately follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
