James Reeve Cumming II, beloved husband of Marianne Jessup-Cumming, passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2022, in Raleigh, NC. He was born January 31, 1943, to the late James Reeve Cumming I and Alice J Cumming.
James, otherwise known as Jim, is survived by his wife Marianne Jessup-Cumming, eldest son, James Reeve Cumming III, daughter, Michelle K Snyder, all of Raleigh, NC and sons Paul H. Cumming and David A. Cumming. Affectionately known as Papa, Pop Pop and Grandpa, Jim was the proud grandfather of eleven grandchildren.
He was born in Alabama however grew up in the quaint village of New Bremen, Ohio with his eldest sister Melinda Waltz of Saskatchewan, Canada and his brother, the late Chad Cumming of Little Rock, Arkansas. Jim treasured his relationships with his siblings.
Jim graduated from New Bremen High School, in New Bremen Ohio. Some of his happiest memories as a young man were spent at Culver Naval Academy, during the summers, with his younger brother Chad. The kids called Jim “Moose” because of his size and when Chad joined him, Chad was known as “Little Moose”. After high school Jim went on to study at Valparaiso University.
In 1969 Jim moved to North Carolina and started his family.
Jim was larger than life. He never met a stranger. Talking to every new person he came across as if he’d known them all his life. His laugh was as boisterous as his personality. Jim loved all things ACC but his heart remained loyal to his Ohio State Buckeyes. Passions included Ham radio, photography, his extensive train collection, camping and going to the races. He and Marianne loved going to the Indianapolis 500 as often as they could.
Jim will be sorely missed. We welcome you to share your memories and photos.
Arrangements by Brown-Wynne, 300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh.
