James, better known as Paw Paw to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, served in the United States Army and was a proud Korean War Veteran. He worked for Cone Mills in Greensboro for 46 years until retiring and recently celebrated 60 years of marriage with his beautiful bride Sylvia Harris Cox on July 26, 2013.
Paw Paw was an avid fisherman and enjoyed the sport most at the beach or at his grandson’s cabin in southern Virginia. He also had a deep love for southern gospel music and sang in a quartet in his twenties. Paw Paw cherished spending time with his family, telling wonderful stories, watching his grand and great-grandchildren grow up and teaching them how to fish.
James survived by one sister, four brothers, a loving wife, Sylvia Harris Cox of Raleigh; three sons, James “Jimmy” Cox, Jr. (Yon Sil Cox) of Raleigh, Pastor Alan Cox (Melody Cox) of Danbury, NC, Danny Cox (Diane Cox) of Raleigh; eleven grandchildren, Samantha Cox of Zebulon, Jennifer Ayscue (Jeremy Ayscue) of Youngsville, Jimmy Cox III of Raleigh, Amber Medlin (Bobby Medlin) of Youngsville, Daniel Cox (Natalie Cox) of Raleigh, Ashley Smyth (Josh Smyth) of Fuquay-Varina, Adam Cox (Cameron Cox) of Youngsville, Stephanie Vernon (Travis Vernon) of Danbury, Mandi Siceloff (Bryan Siceloff) of Boone, Zachary Cox of High Point, and Marcus Cox of High Point; nine great-grandchildren, Angel Foster of Youngsville, Will Cox of Raleigh, Lilly Cox of Raleigh, Ava Cox of Raleigh, Bailey Medlin of Youngsville, Boone Medlin of Youngsville, Sadie Vernon of Danbury, and Piper Smyth of Fuquay-Varina and Jackson Siceloff due April 2014
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at Olde Mount Vernon Church, 11610 Durant Road, Raleigh, NC 27615. Burial will follow at Olde Mount Vernon Cemetery. The family will receive friends starting at 1:00 P.M. prior to the service.
